Ⅰ. Literature review
Nowadays, with the development of economic globalization,
intercultural communication is becoming increasingly frequent. Traveling is one
of the most popular communications. It is a pleasant enjoyment for tourists to
experience foreign cultures. Thus tourism has become a pillar industry in China’s development toward a
socialist market economy. Relying on its rich natural and human
resources and great potential for economic development,
my home city — Hulun
Buir City
has become a national tourist attraction, National
Grassland Tourism Development Zones, and the National Ecological Demonstration
Area. There is North China's tourism diversified
and concentrated resources areas. To let foreign friends understand the Hulun
Buir beautiful tourist destination, this article focuses on the English
translation of travel-related information of this place, and the English
translation of some special spot names and their cultural meaning’s English
conveying.
Among the so many scholars who examine
tourism translation, Nida and Taber deserve prime attention for their thorough research of
translation in the field of theory and practice in their book The
Theory and Practice of Translation
(1974). This book gave me some
theory supports when I translated the related tourist information of Hulun
Buir. Newmark, in his book Approaches to Translation (1981), defined and discussed significant aspects of translation both in theory and practice, and especially
Part Two of this
book, aimed to assist translators by proposing criteria and procedures.
Other themes in the book included the importance of translation in the transmission of
culture and the diffusion of knowledge, and in suggesting the relationship
between thought and language. The book will be useful to my translation.(这些理论与旅游信息的翻译关系如何联系起来,可以只提到其中的部分有关章节?) Peter Newmark remarked on the
hardship of translation. And, the very beginning of this hardship is text
analysis of the original. Whenever the translator goes about a text, the first
step he has to take is to analyze the source text. The significance of this
step is like that of the foundation to the whole staircase. Without it, a good
translation can never be achieved. I think this book is
very useful which gives me some ideas before I start the activity of
translating the tourism texts. I can analyze the tourism texts in a proper and
helpful way, and then can do a satisfactory translation. His another
book called A Textbook on Translation (1988) was
arguably one of the few classic texts in the occasionally emerging field of
translation studies and stands out among the other, often more abstract and
cultural theory-inspired works of ‘translatology’ because of its determination
to be immediately practical and applicable to actual, hands-on (usually literary)
translation work. Newmark supports loyalty to the original as opposed to the
‘transcriptions’ of a new text in the target language. According to Newmark, either informative text or
vocative n.呼格text belongs to “communicative translation”, while the
expressive text to “semantic translation”. In his opinion, communicative
translation attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in
such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and
comprehensible to the readership. Apart from that, Nord made contribution to the research of Oriented
Text Analysis by writing a book titled Text Analysis in Translation:
Theory, Methodology, and Didactic Application of a Model for
Translation-Oriented Text Analysis. Designed for application to all
text types and language pairs, Nord's approach aims to provide "criteria
for the classification of texts for translation classes, and some guidelines
for assessing the quality of the translation" (注明出处)On the part two section of
this book describes the role of source text analysis which is give me guide to
how to analysis the source text of tourist material.
And in the Language, Culture, and Translating (1993), Nida summarized some of the major features of the designative meanings. All these features are the words’ distinctive semantic
features. To know the function of language is very necessary for the
translation. According to Nida, language had two basic types of functions: (注明出处) psychological and sociological. Considering the culture features, and to
know enough background of the source text was also very important. In author’s opinion, a
good translation should be characterized by a relatively proper, full and
perfect transference of culturally related messages from the source language to
the target language. It shows that difficulties in
translation stem from cultural discrepancies, which exert a great threat to the
translator. Translating as a Purposeful Activity: Functional Approaches Explained (2001) written by Nord, includes an overview of how the theories developed,
illustrations of the main ideas, and specific applications to translator
training, literary translation, interpreting and ethics. The survey concludes
with a concise review of the criticisms that have been made of the theories,
together with perspectives for the future development of functionalist
approaches.(注意相关性原则,不要写成书评,而是述评)
In China, there are also some experts
who study tourist translation. Books such as Translation and foreign tourist guides 大写by Chen Gang (陈刚主编《旅游翻译与涉外导游》,2004) is about the
characteristics of a cross-cultural communication and tourist
translation for guides. On the fifth chapter of his book, he introduced tourism version of the Style. I think this book will help me a lot in the
way of how to translate
the special terms, and scenic spots. In the book named Applied
Translation
Function
by Jia Wenbo(贾文波主编,《应用翻译功能论》,2004) , the author illustrated the functional theory mainly from the perspective of
different types of text and translation purposes, and discussed
different strategies and specific functional version of the translation. The books serve as a
guide to students and practitioners to help them attain proficiency in tourism translation. It will enlarge my view on
the study of functional version of the tourism translation. In the book Translation Aesthetics (毛荣贵编著,《翻译美学》,2005), Professor Mao Ronggui
discusses translation from the angle of aesthetics.
Aesthetics, a culture’s concepts concerning beauty and good taste, as
expressed in its art, folklore, music, and dance, are of a particular interest
to international tourists. Without the culturally correct interpretation of a
society’s aesthetic values, communication is seldom successful. Insensitivity
to aesthetics can not only lead to ineffective communication, but may offend
tourists or create a negative impression as well. I do agree to his opinions which give me a hint when I intend to
translate the scenic spots of Hulun Buir.
Others propose the methods of how to
translate the special terms, and scenic spots. They provide rules to the
translators. I can only list some of my references here, and besides these
above, others such as magazines and books evaluating the translation of tourist
information also broadened my view on the study of tourist translation. And
there are also some relative works and dissertations, which are indispensable
materials in expounding the essay.
